Post Oral Defense

Posted on April 18, 2016 at 9:50 PM Comments comments (18)

I believe my defense went well…lots to reflect on and lots to look forward too.

As I prepare to take this project beyond Grad School, there are a lot of components I will need to compile. The business side of the project is going to be vital to its success. I will need to learn how to speak the language. I will also need to iron out cost and materials.

I am excited to see where this project will take me. I am willing to put in the work to take it as far as I can, regardless of outcome!

Grad school has been a series of ups and down, interlaced with everything, including the kitchen sink. It has made me a more confident designer. The importance of the process/research that leads to some conclusion is where I am excited to be…failures and all.

Till the next phase of ARORA Interactive Multimedia Display | Wireless headphones!

Post Exhibition

Where to start…

It has been an exhausting, long road getting to this point, but I am pretty sure that is the whole point of Grad school. Everything that could have happened during my two years, has happened. I type that as I sit in a hospital room at Childern’s with a surgical mask on. This is my second night sleeping in the room with my daughter, Aasha. She was placed in ICU on Sunday with respiratory issues. She is better now and we look forward to getting out of here.

The Exhibition…

I am happy how the exhibition went, even though there are many things I would have done if I had the time. All I knew was, I needed to make sure when I presented the final edit, it was something I was proud of and met my expectations. I look forward to the future of this product and if it actually has the value to become a reality.

My Presentation…

I was the most worried about my presentation. It was a lot of extra weight on my shoulders knowing after I was done with the project portion, I had to prepare for the presentation. I am glad it is over with and proud of my accomplishments.

I know there is still a lot of work to do. My next step is to see about the legal factors (Patent & Branding). I hope to continue making progress with the design and get it ready for potential investors to create a prototype. I look forward to getting some much needed feedback on my final project.

Had to film...

A few changes in direction over the last couple weeks forced me into the special FXs world. Used the green screen to create a few effect shoots of my phone, the Arora App and sending images to the headphones. It took a few shots, but I feel good about the final comps.

I had 2 great studio visits with the 3 key members of my thesis project this week. Josh, Deno and Tom Gattis help me get over so major issues with what I was presenting at the show. I really feel like the 3 of us are in agreement of what needs to be done…we are all on the same page. I went 2 weeks not know which way to go dialog coming at me from all directions.

Thesis show should be a time of reflection and celebration with those important to the process. We all agreed that giving a 20-30 min presentation on my process, research and conclusions, just wasn’t the right thing to do.

Here we go…

Sample renders of the headphones. From Concept to final.

Post Crit 2 | Summary

Posted on February 25, 2016 at 12:35 AM Comments comments (1)

My second crit was very informative. I was able to present pieces that depict what I wanted my final pieces to look like.

Logo & Branding

The overall reaction to my logo was positive. There are a few minor things to conceder (rounding corners) but for the most part, I have solidified my logo.

The colors work much better. It connects all the pieces of ARORA...Modern Sleek Technology geared to a generation that wants the best of the best.

The mockup of the Ad gave the audience a great look at who the user could be. I will be looking for models to create the final ads to be used on the TV displays during the thesis show. I have some leads from Kat and Zach

Final Show

I believe I have a good layout to showcase my thesis work. I will need to finalize this with Michael Goodson.

I purchased a premium gift box for the final. It is black, so I will need to see if it will work. If no, the white boxes are on backorder.

Spring 2016 | Critique II

Posted on February 14, 2016 at 8:55 PM Comments comments (0)

It has been a quick turnaround since my first critique of the semester. I feel good about having a critique because I have been working on a lot of stuff.

Critique I.

Rob & crew were very helpful with addressing my concerns. One of his major concerns was the legal aspect of creating a new brand. Since then I have met with Nikki Hudson, Intellectual Property Attorney at Express. Our meeting was very informative…please refer to the Legal post on my blog (below) for more info.

Please refer to my Post Critique I Post Below, as well.

Critique II

I had my first combo meeting with Deno and Josh, Thesis Chair, last Friday in my studio. We discussed everything ARORA. It is great to have two committee member fighting for the success of my project. I have a lot to tighten up, but I feel like they are confident I can reach my goals. We discusses my final thesis show artifacts. We have come to many conclusions on what should be my focus during these final weeks.

Proof of Concept Video

Creating an Exploded View to show all the inner components. This would be part of the Proof of Concept video.

Making sure to create a clear story. Show the user and the purpose of the research/design.

Highlight why this is the next best thing in technology, fashion and music.

Focus on the OLED screens

Make sure to present my research that lead me to my upcoming conclusions. Connect all the dots and present those clearly, with good visuals.

I have looked at the legal portion of my project. I have searched Arora & Aurora under the class 9 filings. Nikki is connecting me with a Patent Attorney.

I took the advice during my last crit concerning my logo and colors. I have reinvented the Branding with a color & logo that depicts the future, technology and light. The new logo is a combination of all the letters in the name ARORA. It also creates a simple silhouette of an individual within the negative space. My product is a statement in individualism and self-expression. I feel this logo embodies the true essence of the product.

Final Thesis Show

I have designed a couple mockups of what I would like the hallway to the Screening Room to look like. I want to present my work through images and animations. I want to create a box that would potentially hold the product. The box will showcase all the headphones have to offer, along with the logo and branding.

I asked Michael Goodson about my ideas, but I will need to wait till the gallery portion of the thesis show is solidified before my concerns are addressed. There is a wall open in the gallery that could be used if the hallway doesn’t pan out.

Critique Potential Outcomes

I hope to address my logo, colors and branding

Talk about my final presentation. Prints vs. TV screens

I hope to have a storyboard ready to discuss. If not, we can talk about what would be important to show on the POC video.

With the final show around the corner and this being my last critique till week 14, I hope to finalize any questions and concerns pertaining to the critique group setting. I will no doubt continue to make modifications with my committee beyond crit.

Legal Stuff

Posted on February 11, 2016 at 4:15 PM Comments comments (0)

I was able to meet with Nikki Hudson, Intellectual Property Attorney at Express. I met Nikki through Elaine Luttrull’s Professional Practice course. I was able to get some valuable information about Trademarking. I learned about filing and searching existing Trademarks. My device would be filed under a Class 9 Trademark.

After my initial search, I found no matches with the ARORA (Reversed second R). I did fine a company, 1More that specializes in fashionable headphones with an acoustic heart. 1More Aurora was registered, but not actively being used.

I will focus my Claim Protection around the unique spelling…Design Version of ARORA. I am also looking into potentially adding an additional term to help separate the brand. Actively using the brand will help secure the Trademark.

Nikki is contacting a patent lawyer based out of Chicago. I am hoping to get help a potential patent. Currently, using a Nondisclosure Agreement, NDA, will help protect my design.

Thesis Committee | Update

Posted on February 5, 2016 at 3:15 PM Comments comments (0)

I was able to meet with both of my advisers (thank you for the time) and I wanted to get everyone on the same page.

All parties seem to be on the same page as to what needs to be done going into the final stages of the thesis.

Deno and I discusses materials, breakdown graphics and Trademarks & Copyrights. We also explored options for the logo, text and over all branding. I have a meeting with Nikki Hudson, an Intellectual Property Attorney at Express this Tuesday. I will lock down all things legal at this meeting. As much as this does not impact my show, it is an important extension of the project post-graduation.

Josh and I focused our meeting around being successful in visually portraying my journey though the conception of the headphones to the final product. Making sure I am able to show the timeline of how my research influenced the project...Problem, Process and Solution! The story behind the product will be a major aspect of the final presentation.

Since I have an idea of what is required of my final paper, I will start outlining all the key points throughout my last 2 years. The goal is the visually and verbally connect all the dots.

My next critique will be Feb. 17th. I will make sure to keep you posted on the direction I am going for the next crit, including the artifacts I present.

I want to get the 3D headphones fully textured and modified for any animation (including a exploded view) & printed images.

3D Concept | Breakdown

Posted on February 4, 2016 at 3:10 PM Comments comments (0)

After hours of software issues, I finally have all the necessary components to move forward with the next phase of my Thesis project.

Original Model By Steve Olerman

Since I am not concerned about modeling and modeling techniques as a part of my thesis, Steve was outsourced to generate the 3D model. I created all the "blueprints" and concept art to be used in the development process. I believe, my current vision, is being represented. I have made some modifications to the model and will continue to as needed.

Render Breakdown

This render shows how I will use different passes to create the final composite.  There are many passes not being represented here, this is 2 passes combined, many more to come. Specular Pass, Beauty Pass, Shadow Pass, Matte/Alpha Passes, Light Direction Etc.

Installing Software

Posted on February 3, 2016 at 12:50 AM Comments comments (1)

Since I bought a new machine last semester, I have been slowly adding all the necessary software back to the computer. As I enter the 3D phase of my project, I have come to realize Autodesk Maya 2016 no longer has the Mental Ray Render as part of the program.....DAMMIT!!!!!! It is a must when rendering Multiple Passes and working with Render Layers. I need the Ambient Occlusion pass to create the contact shadows for the final comps.

Installing software eats up time and is just all around irritating.

Ambient Occlusion Pass | AO Pass

The AO pass creates the deep shadows you find between cracks and seams and helps to create a more realistic render.

Post Crit | Summary

Posted on January 25, 2016 at 1:15 PM Comments comments (0)

I feel my first critique of the semester was extremely productive and very informative. I believe my concerns and topics of discussion were touch upon. I received great feedback on the parts of my project I presented.

I think I relayed my problem statement, research and designs clearly and to the area that needed a major tune-up. I still have many things to consider, but I feel good about the work I presented and the direction I am heading.

Things to think about…

- Current logo needs more motion.

- The color green

- The color and logo resemble the X-box logo

- The band looked more like LCD lights…not OLED screens

- Possible versions…High End/Low End

- Bring Screens to the edge of the ear pieces

- Make sure ARORA is available

- Intellectual Property

- Working on the 3D Model

- Contacted Nikki Hudson to discuss Intellectual Properties

- Storyboards for Proof of Concept

- Rethink Branding

- Users and Audience

Spring 2016 | Critique I

Posted on January 18, 2016 at 12:10 AM Comments comments (2)

Where I left off…

By the end of last semester, I had a good idea of what I wanted the headphones to look like and how I was going to market the product. With the help of my survey, I was able to identify my target user. I was also able to get a better perspective of how individuals would feel about having such unique visuals on a pair of over-ear headphones.

Where I am now...

I spent the first week of break working on scale and dimension. I also attend Sundown Rundown, an entrepreneurial pitch event Friday Dec. 18th. I was able to see how other individual prepared for a product pitch. I connected with a few people that I will be meeting with to discuss my product and its potential.

The 2 weeks leading into spring semester were very productive. I stared to work on logos and branding. I create a more details graphic to represent the look of the final CGI Model. With the dimensions established, I have begun the 3D modeling phase. Before I put too much time in to the modeling phase (this will be the main artifact at the end of the semester) I want to make sure the dimensions work for the headphones.

Topics of discussion

1. Branding

a. Logo

b. Colors

c. Taglines and Marketing

2. Dimensions

a. How does the scale work?

b. Is the Head Band screen necessary?

(I am concerned the screen on the band has caused the headphones to be larger than needed)

c. Should I have 2 versions, the deluxe model with screens on the ear pieces and the band & a secondary model that has screens on the ear pieces only?

Please review previous blog posts from the end of last semester till now for images.

LG made an 18-inch display you can roll up like a newspaper

LG Display has a prototype 18-inch screen it's showing off at the Consumer Electronics Show this week that rolls up like a piece of paper. The technology builds on LG's forward-looking OLED work focusing on bendable, rollable, and curving displays. The company showed similar technology last year as a proof of concept, but kept images behind closed doors. Now LG looks ready to show the world.
